Congratulations to our SA, WA and NT State/Territory Award Winners!
26 October 2011
The SA, WA and NT State/Territory Award winners were announced at a cocktail reception in Adelaide last night with Adelaide Hills Vocational College (SA), Clontarf Aboriginal College (WA) and Millner Primary School (NT) taking out respective honours. Each will receive a total of $100,000 in funding towards their school-community partnerships and will go in the running for the National Award.
Adelaide Hills Vocational College and Mt Barker High School have formed a partnership with SA Police (SAPOL), Juvenile Justice Board, Adelaide Hills Community Health Service, District Council of Mount Barker, Adelaide Hills Council and Adelaide Hills Youth Sector Network to prevent graffiti and lower instances of juvenile crime.
Known as the Urban Art Project, the partnership utilises community expertise to run programs for at-risk students highlighting the cost of graffiti removal and teaching them to appreciate local businesses.
Through their off-site campus, the school has created a flexible learning environment for previously disengaged students. There is a real sense of collaboration among all partners and their initiative is supported by research and planning.
Clontarf Aboriginal College's school-community partnership with Ertech Holdings Pty Ltd and Polytechnic West was set up to engage students through hands-on learning and to provide vocational opportunities for school-leavers.
A youth training scheme is run two days per week in a purpose-built facility with attendance at the nationally accredited training days contributing to completion of the WA Certificate of Education.
Students have embraced the hands-on learning and shown new motivation to take their learnings and responsibility into the workforce. As a result of their partnership, the school has witnessed a greater level of engagement and an increase in students progressing from study to the workplace.
Clontarf Aboriginal College’s success follows a $25,000 2009 NAB Schools First Seed Funding Award win for a separate community partnership.
Millner Primary School has collaborated with Save The Children, AFL NT, Corrugated Iron Youth Arts, Children's Development Team and Danila Dilba Health Services to form ERICUS (Educating Indigenous Children in Urban Settings) to provide a range of offerings for students so that they can excel in sport and the arts and build self-esteem.
Excellent educational outcomes are being achieved and there are also intensive literacy programs that provide support for families.
