NAB Schools First Discussion Forums

The NAB Schools First team answer your application questions

Guest: Josie Kaddour
Guest: Belinda Allitt - NAB - Communications Manager
Date: Monday, 5 March 2012 - Friday, 29 June 2012
Time: 9.00am (AEST) on Monday, 20 June 2011 - 5.00pm (AEST) on Friday, 29 July 2011
Details: Ask us your questions around your application for a 2011 NAB Schools First Impact or Seed Funding Award.

Jim Green:20/6/2011 09:07AM
Our school missed out on an award in 2010 but were grateful to receive some excellent feedback on how to improve our application. One identified area of improvement was to provide greater evidence of the collaborative nature of the partnership. We have discussed, with our partner organisation, including reference to a communication tracking form and/or needs analysis in our application and possibly including these in the supporting data. Is this the type of evidence you are looking for and what else would you advise to strengthen this section of our application?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jim When we advised that more evidence of collaboration was required we were suggesting that we would like to know how both the school and the partner have worked together from the beginning. The Song Room provides ready-made programs that are not necessarily collaborative. Your application did not indicate to the judges how collaborative your partnership was. You had indicated that TSR had researched the need for Drama and Music but there was little in the way of what the needs of your students were and how these were measured and how TSR was involved in this. You mention that TSR offers ‘tailored programs’ and you needed to also show how the school worked together with TSR in doing this. Thanks Sharon from ACER

I am particularly interested in establishing a project for young people with an interst in the study of astronomy and astrophysics and the career paths such knowledge may inspire. I am looking to do this as a Rotary Project and partnering with a number of schools in our region so do not have a specific school to put this forward. I am really seeking information on whether this may get a geunsey with NAB Schools First before I proceed any further. Rotary has used the model for vocational training in the Beef Cattle Industry, the Wool Industry and Marine Scineces as well .. we target school level kids and provide hands on experiential learning situations.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Aileen. I would suggest you contact the schools in your region, specifically Science teachers as this is their area. There have been quite a few schools that have won an award with partnerships with local industries in agriculture and Marine Science. You can read their case studes in the Winners section of the NAB Schools First website – Ballina HS, Arethusa College and more. Those with an interest in the Sciences – Parade College VIC, Santa Maria College VIC, Lucas Heights Community School NSW.

I just had a question with regards to the use of the money (if lucky enough) to purchase equipment. I am looking at putting forward an application with regards to the Agriculture Department at my school and I have lots of partnerships with community members (it is very difficult to choose just one to outline in the application). We desperately need a truck to cart our cattle to shows for the students to compete at. Is the purchase of a truck allowed? It would only be a cheap second hand one, around $15000-20000.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi there Robyn, thanks for your question. One of the unique things about NAB Schools First is that if you are successful there is flexibility in how you spend the award funds. You can spend a component of it on administrative costs and yes we have had previous winners purchase vehicles in the past. As long as the funds are spent on the Partnership and students will benefit directly from having access to such a vehicle then this will be fine. All the best with you application!

Hi, I work for a community youth organisation, I was wondering if it is possible for our organisation to apply for the funding in partnership with one of our local schools, or does the school need to apply? Thankyou.

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hello Alice, The application should really be a joint process as it is important that the benefits to both parties are addressed. The application needs to be submitted by the school as the Principal needs to approve/be across the application. If successful, the school is notified and is usually our first point of contact. However, we do advise that all applications are worked on by both parties so if you would like to get the ball rolling as the community partner - go for it. Thank you.

Tue Lemalu:22/6/2011 08:46AM
Hello Jodie Kaddour, I was wondering if it is possible for our Samoan community school entittle to apply for the funding in parthnership. We really need some help for our school resouces, materials and equipment. Those thing we havn\'t got anything at all, we do anything we can to make some fundraising from the people in our community, but the most of the money we raised not enough. We had ten (10) volenteer teachers to help and support our school community. Everything in manual and money the our own pocket to try to help up our school community children. There are 72 children in our school community, aged 1 - 21 years old including babies also. we really appriciate if you can help and support our school community by any money or funding. Kindest regards Tue Lemalu (Principal)

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Tue, It is not clear if you are a Samoan school in Australia or in Samoa. The NAB Schools First Awards are open to any school within Australia. This might be an opportunity for an Australian school to partner with an organisation such as Rotary or Lions to work together to aid an overseas school. It might be a good idea for you to contact an aid organisation and suggest this as a way to gain the support of an Australian school and its partner.

Tue Lemalu:22/6/2011 09:04AM
Thank your ...I\'ve got your email

Janice Hughes:26/6/2011 09:37PM
Hello Josie, Our school currently has a breakfast club to encourage healthy eating, punctual attendance, and provide a nurturing environment.Students prepare much of the food themselves. There is already a partnership(unfunded) with local business who provide foodstuffs. We would like to extend the program to be able to provide a wider range of foods (e.g. hot foods). There is also a local organisation of youthworkers who have visted from time to time and this could be a way of linking students in with services in the community. So I am unsure as to who our main partnership would be with.If it is better to confine our student outcomes to an appreciation of a healthy nourishing start to the day (with our partners as essentially suppliers of goods) or if it is better to focus on strengthening a partnership with an organisation who will attend the school and directly link in with the students. Thanks for your consideration of this dilemma!

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi there Janice, thanks for your question. It is imperative that you demonstrate to the judges that this is a true partnership, so a direct link with the students is critical and by having your partner organisation attend the school in a physical sense will strengthen your partnership and likely the outcomes for your students.

Jess :27/6/2011 09:22AM
Hi, I was juat looking at the application guidelines and noticed this part: External programs offered to a school which have not been developed in conjunction with the school, are not considered partnerships in the terms of NAB Schools First. (E.g. Fee for service, a readymade program that the school is paying to have delivered, a service delivery program, a government or similar initiative, etc.). Our partnership was sought out by the school in response to an identified need. Our organisation, in parnership with the school decided to use an already existing program to address this need, adapting it to suit the particular school environment. Neither our organisation nor the school had been involved with this program before. Given that this partnership was undertaken out of a school identified need and that the school and our organisation has worked together to adapt this program for this particular school, are we still able to apply for an award?

Josie Kaddour replied:
If the school pays for the delivery of a program by an outside organisation, this is regarded as a fee for service. If the program is being offered by an outside organisation for no fee and a program is being adapated by the school and the organisation delivering it to suit the needs of the students, then this type of partnership would be eligible.

susan cromb:27/6/2011 12:43PM
Hi, I have an idea to further our friendship with our sister school in Bali and wondered if it would fit within the guidelines for Seed Funding (I have looked at the criteria). My Primary School in WA is a member of AdoptASchool Assn Inc which operates in WA. Their purpose is to match schools in WA and Bali in partnership and thus build cultural awareness and friendships. I would like funding which would cover 5 Balinese teachers from sister schools to come to WA for 4 weeks to stay with families within their sister school community. Whilst in WA schools, they could act as cultural ambassadors within the schools and local community by attending P & C , Rotary, Lions, Zonta meetings etc I\'d greatly appreciate any feedback. With thanks Susan Cromb Mt Hawthorn PS

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Susan, What you need to take into account is that NAB Schools First is rewarding schools that have great partnerships that improve educational outcomes for students in the school. It is not a funding provider. You could apply for an award with the partnership with AdoptASchool Assn Inc and show how this partnership is working with the school to improve educational outcomes. The program of activities you describe would be part of this partnership. Sharon

Susan Cromb:28/6/2011 03:05PM
Hi, Just wondering if there is a \"use by\" date for the Award. Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi there Susan, thanks for your question. Once an application has been deemed successful and announced as a NAB Schools First winner, there is no 'use by' date on the use of award funds. Thanks

Susan Cromb:28/6/2011 03:46PM
Thanks Josie. Another question....is it acceptable to have 3 schools working on the one project, with one school being the main driver (their name would be on the cover page of the application)? I have outlined my idea above which Sharon replied to yesterday. Thanks.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi again Susan, yes it's acceptable to do this and we've had previous winners in the same situation over the past 2 years. You just need to be very clear in your application about which school is the main driver and how the students will directly benefit.

Debra McGuigan:29/6/2011 10:34AM
We are a low socio economic school in the Hunter Valley in NSW. A staff member recently completed The Drumbeat Program presented by The University of Newcsastle and is keen to get it started at our school. Our Principal, P and C and staff agree. We would require funding to train another facilitator , purchase the necessary resources and the drums.Could you advise us of the suitability of such a partnership and what commitment would we need from Drumbeat to be successful? Many Thanks Debra McGuigan

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Debra, thanks for your question. In order to be eligible for NAB Schools First awards, you must be in a 'true' partnership that is sustainable and has both partners contributing to the partnership - or planning to implement such a partnership (for a Seed Funding Award). You would need an ongoing commitment from Drumbeat to be involved as an ongoing partner that contributes to the outcomes for students.

Michele Walmsley:29/6/2011 07:40PM
HI Josie. Our school has bee asked to participate with a group of school in a submission for a very worthwhile program. We are intending to submit an application for a Seed Funding award. Can we apply for both? Will already being involved in a group project lesson our chances of being successful in our seed application? Thanks, Michele, Tomaree PS

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Michele, you can apply for both, however you can only win one award. The lead school will be awarded the funds to be spent on the partnership, so you need to think about which award you're best placed to be applying for.

tripty regmi:30/6/2011 12:43PM
is the scholarship programme for the uni students as well?? and for international students too?? if yes could you specify the categories and requirements.., thankyou

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hello Tripty, the NAB Schools First awards are open to all Australian schools. The partnerships we are looking for are those that are directly benefitting students in schools (up to Year 12). A University can be a Community Partner that is working with an Australian school in an award submission and therefore University students might benefit as a result, but the award will be given to the school to be spent on the partnership.

Lorraine Ellis:03/7/2011 02:21PM
Hi Is it possible for one school to apply for an Impact Award with one partner and a Seed Award with another partner on a different project. I appreciate only one award could be approved to the same school.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Lorraine, yes you are correct. You can submit more than one application in either category, but your school is only eligible to receive one award.

Lorraine Ellis:03/7/2011 03:08PM
Hi, is it okay to add photos in the criteria sections and in the evidence section of the application?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Lorraine. You are unable to submit any photos as part of your application. The criteria sections will accept text only. Thanks.

Steph:05/7/2011 11:20AM
Good Morning! Just wanted to clarify that within the application itself, that we can mention the name of the Community Organisation and the physical location of the school, just not the School\'s name? We are part of a \'learning community\', a group of seven schools that work together within a regional area, and I just want to make sure I can use the name of the learning community, and refer to the name of Valley community we are a part of? Thanks!

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi Steph. That is correct. Aside from Part 1: Cover Page, the school name cannot be mentioned in your application. The community organisation name and school location, however, can be mentioned in all parts of the application. Good luck!

John:05/7/2011 02:48PM
Josie. I am new to my administration role here at my school this year. I am currently busy working on a partnership with a local university. A brief outline of the plan is to have student/teachers working with the school to do action research as well focus the whole school staff focus on teaching pedagogy particularly with an emphasis on technology in the classroom as the school still have the old blackboards. Furthermore, mid 2012 the plan is to move into focusing on multiliteracies as a whole school approach. Based on my brief overview - would this within the guidelines of applying for NAB funding? Thanks!

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi John. Thank you for your question. By partnering with a university, your school would be eligible to apply for a Seed Funding Award. A need would have to be identified and this can be done by referring to school stats, records and other data. How the university and the school will work together on a plan to improve student outcomes by the action research and focusing on the teaching and learning in the school, is important. The best applications are those where the school and the partner work together to improve outcomes for students. Schools can be as innovative and creative as they like. It is the partnership that is important. Thanks and good luck!

Jennene Riggs:05/7/2011 06:08PM
Hello, I was wanting to gauge what our chances of receiving a seed funding award would be for our partnership that is endeavoring to create a video learning package on the marine environment. In short we intend to produce DVD\'s with accompanying worksheets, each DVD is divided into a series of short videos on different marine creatures, habitats and behaviour. The DVD\'s would be geared towards the early learning phase (K-2) and structured age appropriately for each of those years. We have already presented four of these short videos to the year one class at our partner school and have received very positive feedback from parents, kids and teachers -they love it! My other question is are we allowed to seek other funding options to further develop this project in conjunction with (if successful) the schools first award? Thanks and regards, Jennene

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi there Jennene, to be eligible to apply for a NAB Schools First award you must be in a partnership or for Seed Funding, have a partner on board who is ready to assist in delivering the activities you have mentioned with your students. If you are a school and you are only partnering with another school, this will not be eligible, you must have at least one non-school entity as a partner. In terms of seeding other funding for the project, this is absolutely ok. Thanks

Coty Cortese:06/7/2011 02:16PM
Hello, the community organisation I work with has been speaking to several schools over the past few months to build leadership and community organising training with senior school students ( year 10-11). The Principals and teachers identify potential \"leaders\" and we then engage with them and students on how they can identify and act on issues that affect them and their peers, i.e. bullying, racial vilification, etc., The aim is to teach young people how to act on their own and peers behalf, and ultimately lead to better community citizens. The students at each school identify the issues that are having the most impact on them. This obviously has a positive impact on educational performance both at the school and in later years. We have identified two schools that are ready and engaged to commnece developing the program. Is this something that would qualify under the seeding award? Coty

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi there Coty, Seed Funding awards are for those that are setting up new partnerships or are in the early stages of partnership and can't yet demonstrate impact through evidence. So it sounds as though you are in a position to apply for Seed Funding. Each school will need to apply separately in partnership with you or you can submit one joint application but will need to nominate the 'lead' school.

Peter Moule:07/7/2011 10:38AM
Hi, The school in which I work has a significant number of indigenous children. Some have significant absentee issues and many do not perform well in national testing. Our school natural environment wasextensively damaged in cyclone Yasi. We have planned to construct an indigenous bush tucker trail in partnership with the Mungalla Indigenous Co-op and Terrain Natural Resources Management. Indigenous leaders will identify the most suitable plants and have frequent on site activities with the students to boost self esteem and encourage greater attendance at school, Terrain NRM will provide expertise in planning and project management. Future programs are already planned as the waterway adjacent to the school is badly in need of scientific intervention. A signifcant amount of the seed funding will be applied to the bush tucker trail and provision of cyclone resistant shade trees. Would the above qualify for a seed funding award.

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi Peter, thanks for your question. Ensure you clearly outline the activities each partner will undertake to ensure students benefit from this partnership. For the purposes of your submimssion, you will need to identify a lead partner, however will have the opportunity to reference the other partners involved as well. As this partnership is in the stages of being created, then yes, Seed Funding is the category best suited.

Deb Bland:07/7/2011 01:46PM
Hello..Our school was planning to apply for a Seed Funding Award with an organisation that we have been developing a partnership with over the last year. However during a recent planning meeting we came to realise that the need that we are working towards, has had other parties involved that are working towards a similiar need. We basically realised that there was an \'umbrella effect\' in place. Bascially the Defence Force has a service set up by the\'Defence Community Office\'. They in turn set up Community centres at military bases that help families settle into new areas. Our centre (MCC) is our partner and we idenitifed the need to help the students intergrate into our school. The DCO has been working with our school for the last 10 years. So our problem now is- are we actually an impact as we are expanding the role of the MCC with the school, or as this is a new objective of the MCC and our school, are we a seed as we first thought???

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi Deb, thanks for your question. You are in the best position to decide whether you should apply for Impact or Seed Funding, but the best question to ask yourself is this: Can you demonstrate, through evidence, that students have benefited from the partnership? If so, then you can show 'Impact.' If you can't demonstrate this Impact, then your partnership (or this new element) will be about highlighting the perceived benefit to your students and there better placed for Seed Funding.

Vivienne Pearson:07/7/2011 02:12PM
A followup question to Deb Bland\'s one above... If this school considers themselves to have multiple partners does it matter that some partners are less active currently than in the past? Also, do you have any tips on how/where to refer to the multiple partners given that the application form is largely geared towards a single partner. For example, in the question where you describe the partner organisation, should we describe all three or just the lead partner? Thankyou for your assistance in helping us think about this!

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi Vivienne, it doesn't matter if some partners are less active now than in the past, just think clearly about which partner is the 'lead' partner and why. It's best to reference all your partners but describe the 'lead' partner organisation where asked

Vicki:07/7/2011 03:11PM
I initially completed Part 3 in Word at 12 point and then did a cut and paste for each section. The text, both online and in the pdf are now closer to 6 point and I can\'t see how to adjust it in the online process. Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Vicki. Only Part 4: Supporting Documents needs to be completed in size 12 font. If you have uploaded a supplementary document to your application, then it needs to adhere to the size 12 font size and needs to be three (3) pages in length only and no larger than 1MB. All other sections of the application form are set to a standard font size and cannot be adjusted. Good luck!

Colleen South:08/7/2011 02:10PM
Hi, Our school is applying for a Seed Funding Grant for a partnership between a Special School and a Nursing Home.In writing to Criteria 1 on Reference to relevent research, I have found plenty of research and writing on the topic of the benefits of productive interactions to both children and the elderly in various projects. Do I need to reference specific studies etc and is there a prefered referencing system? Also in your Support documents I have not been able to access the last 3 links mentioned on the Project Management Checklist - (Gantt Chart ??, Risk Assessment Template and the Project Report Template)

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Colleen. With reference to criteria 1, please reference all research as specifically as possible, however, there is no preferred referencing system. The support documents you refer to are not currently on the website but we can email these to you if you would like them. Please email us at info@schoolsfirst.edu.au. Good luck!

Delphi:08/7/2011 02:31PM
Hello I thought to save all my questions for one request as follows: 1. If your Seed Funding application was unsuccessful last year is it necessary to reference that in this application along with the reasons why or do the judges reference last years application in any way for resubmissions ? 2. Is it allowable to include partnership activity that has taken place since the previous submission ? 3. With reference to research evidence, are judges looking for comparative study names and years conducted, web link references or extracts from research studies highlighting key points (with sources indicated)? Also, owing to an abundance of research evidence, how many references would be sufficient ? 4. With reference to word counts is a space between words deliniating a single word? Or, is a hyphenated word counted as two words ? 5. Does the submission need to have a school staff member as the key contact or can it be a non staff member/school council member (that has the support of school management)?6. In terms of reducing repetition in the criteria data, can reference be made between the criteria? eg, refer to criteria X regarding X evidence. 7. Will extracts from strategic documents suffice as evidence where required or is it preferred to simply name the strategic documents that exist ? 8. Can Seed Funding be used for joint research projects by the partnership whereby the benefits for students can be positively quanitified/measurable ? Thank you in advance for responding !

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Delphi. Thank you for your post. In answer to your questions: 1. There is no need to make any reference to a previous application. All applications should be anonymous and the judges will not know the name of the school. It is only when schools receive feedback on an unsuccessful application that this is relevant. 2. Again, all applications are anonymous and the judges do not take any previous applications into consideration so you should include the most up-to-date activity that has taken place within your partnership. 3. Too much information would take too many words. What the judges want to know is that you have done some research that shows that your idea is based on solid evidence and that there is some evidence that already exists showing the idea would work. You don’t need more than what is mentioned in the example below. The most important aspect of including research is to show that it is directly related to your partnership. Example: A partnership between a local library and a school to address low literacy levels. The school needed to identify research that showed that access to books leads to improvement in literacy. Research in the US has proven that students who own their own books have higher levels of literacy. A higher level of literacy leads to improvement in all subject areas. Book ownership is one of the most basic and proven elements to helping a child succeed in school. (S. Neuman and D. Celano and S. Krashen, Studies from 1990 - 2009 ) In Australia, over 60 studies have shown a direct improvement in student achievement when school libraries were well-stocked and staffed. This is true for academic achievement and for literacy. Reading scores rise. Students read more. Their writing and spelling and vocabulary improve. http://myschoollibrary.wordpress.com/literacy/ (Lonsdale, Haycock, Hay 2003 – 2009). What you will find when you do some research is that there are lots of ideas already out there and you could make use of them! I would suggest a Google search. 4. Hyphenated words count as one word. 5. Anyone who works in the school can be the key contact but it would make sense for this person to be the person who is the key contact for the partnership. 6. This is ok. 7. Just referring to the docs that have been collected is ok. Some summing up might be necessary. 8. If your school wins an award the award money can be used to develop and drive the partnership in any way. I hope this has helped. Good luck.

Anthony Mayne:08/7/2011 02:45PM
Hi, funding question. the partnership in mind has been established for 18 months and is recognised as an innovative and effective organisation between the school and regional community/business group in a small, isolated regional community with socio-educational challenges. Partnership is still developing and not fully mature. We seem to be ticking the 5 points of the Impact Award though just wanted to double check the definition. Thank you.

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi Anthony, You refer to the partnership as a developing one and not fully mature. This would suggest that you are not yet at the stage where you could show evidence of educational outcomes for your students. A Seed Funding application for a developing partnership, might be more suitable. Regards, Sharon

Ben Duggan:12/7/2011 11:05AM
Hi, I am working on a project called Raising Hope which will work with around 150 local schools in our region to address equity issues. We are working with three local Universities, teachers, banks and developers to make it happen. We are interested in applying for Seed Funding to help the organization grow and work with schools in 2012. Do we need to get one of our schools to apply for funding for the organization to work with all the schools? Or can we apply as an external organization working directly with schools?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Ben. Thank you for your question. You will need to get a school involved in your partnership to apply for the Seed Funding Award though both the school and community organisation are encouraged to work on the application together. Before starting the application, I would strongly suggest reading all of the documents in the Application Pack, which includes the Terms and Conditions and the Application Guidelines, to determine your partnership eligibility to apply. These can be found in the Toolkit section of the website - http://www.schoolsfirst.edu.au/sf-toolkit/index.phps. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Good luck!

Sarah:13/7/2011 11:35AM
A technical question: I am unsure of how to register to commence application - as the lead community partner (one of a numbers of partners in this project) \'crafting up \' & writing up the application on behalf of the school , I would like to register so I can start filling in the application form but see that a requirement is that school representative must submitt - can we change over registration details ?- as the school will be submitting the final application once completed and checked. Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Sarah. Thank you for your question. It is a requirement that the application is submitted by the school on behalf of the partnership. You can register by completing the 'Registration Details' and then begin your application by selecting either the Impact Award or Seed Funding Award tile which will take you to the application form for the relevant category. If you have any issues, please let us know. The following URL will take you directly to registration form - http://www.schoolsfirst.edu.au/sf-awards-login.phps. Thanks and good luck!

Charmaine Vanderbeek:13/7/2011 03:41PM
Mine is purely a technical issue. I\'ve been filling out an application for an Impact Award, all is going well. However, when I view my application as a PDF, question 3 reverts to the future tense instead of the past. For example, the criterion refers to a program that wil be set up, rather than a program has been sucessfully implemented, as per the application form. Could you please advise which is correct. Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Charmaine. Thank you for your question. For Impact Award applications, you need to be able to show that a program was successfully implemented, not that a program will be set up as this is a criteria for Seed Funding Award applications. Please ignore the error if it is in your Impact Award application PDF - it will not affect your Impact Award application if you have been able to show that a program was successfully implemented. Thanks and good luck.

John:14/7/2011 10:14AM
Hi. My issue is another technical issue. I have been doing the seed application. Criterion 2 only allows for 500 words online where the documentation indicated a 600 word limit. Can this be adjusted online or is 500 words the limit for criterion 2. Regards. John

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi John. Thank you for your question. I've just tried inputting 600 words into Criterion 2 in Part 3 of the Seed Funding application form and did not have any issues doing so. I'm concerned that you are having this issue so can you please confirm that Criterion 2 in Part 3 of the Seed Funding application form is where you are having an issue. If not, please advise which question in which part of the application form you are experiencing this issues so that I can test this for you. Feel free to contact me on 1800 649 141 if you'd prefer to discuss. Thanks.

Anna Minney:14/7/2011 12:25PM
Hello, our school has applied before for seed funding and have received some terrific feedback as to how to strengthen our next application. It was stated that we require more details regarding the outcomes for students and how these could be measured. Would this include things like student participation rates, results of surveys, reports/grades and perhaps how it flows through into extra-curricular activities? Would you be able to supply us with other ways to measure and/or outcomes? The judges would have also liked to see more data to establish a baseline from which improvements could have been measured, again could this have been drawn from an initial survey, grades, participation results etc. Your input and assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Anna, The kind of evidence required depends on the needs of the school and the type of partnership you are setting up. School data that is readily available will be useful. Other measurements are pre and post testing, NAPLAN and others. Please read through the guidelines which are in the Tips and Resources section of the website under toolkit. Another useful fact sheet is about what is sound evidence, and this is also in this section. How to measure outcomes and needs is also in these useful documents. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Hi there, with previous applications that we have done we have submitted letters of support with our application. Would these letters be counted as one of the 3 appendixes or could they be additional? Thanks so much

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Sharon. These letters would be considered as part of your three pages of supplementary material so please only include them all if you feel they are necessary to your application and you don't have any other material that you feel would better support your application. Supplementary material will need to be uploaded via one file, be a maximum of three pages in length and no larger than 1MB. Good luck!

Marita Eddy:15/7/2011 09:39AM
I am a Family Liaison Officer Coordinator, coordinating 4 family liaison officers across three schools in Shepparton. United Way Goulburn Valley Community Fund supported our \'A Story a Day\' program last year by funding the schools with ipods as listening posts in classrooms and take home picture stories with audio support cds in English, Arabic and Dari. We are at the beginning stages of this project and are already seeing its benefits in engaging learning for all children especially those who are achieving below the benchmark and those who are learning english as a second language. This project is also supporting our commitment to family school partnerships, resourcing families and children so that they can participate in \'A story a day\' in the home environment. Is this a suitable project to apply for a seeding grant as we would like to see this project extended further to support more students and families in our three schools. Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Marita, NAB Schools First is a program that rewards school-community partnerships so the strength of the partnership between the schools and an outside organisation is what the judges are looking for. Is United Goulburn Valley Community Fund part of an organisation that would fit this role? or just a provider of funds? Look at the criteria for the application and check to see if you can address each point. Sharon (ACER)

Keryn Johnson:15/7/2011 10:20AM
Hi, WE are a volunteer organisation working with a local school to put in an application for a targeted tutoring program. We are wanted to know how \'locked in\' we are with using the funding as we put it in the application. We say this because we are hoping for an extra partnership which may not be in place in time for the grant application which would allow us to use less money per tutor payment and double the amount of tutoring time given to the students. Therefore using overall the same amount of money but gaining double the amount of tutoring time. Thank-you.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Keryn. Thank you for your question. If you are successful as a NAB Schools First Award Winner, the awards funding will need to be used on the winning school-community partnership. What you use it towards is at your discretion, but it needs to be on something connected to the partnership. Good luck!

Beth Durham/Ronda Johnson:17/7/2011 06:24PM
Hello - we are a Local Chaplaincy Support group - we have funded 2 programs for at risk students in the High school - it is a large school with students from varied backgrounds. These programs require training for them to proceed, and to have more input. So far we are encouraged with them, but feel they will need more funding to grow and succeed. Does this seem like an suitable partnership and program for Impact funding, which we have just hear5d about? Thank you.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Beth and Ronda, NAB Schools First rewards schools that have developed a sustainable partnership with an organisation outside the school. Your Chaplaincy Group would mee this requirement. We would like to see partnerships where both the school and the organisation work collaboratively on programs that improve outcomes for students. To win an award, schools must address the criteria on the application - the need of the students, planning together, the activities that have been developed and the outcomes that have been achieved through the partnership. If your support groups works with the school on the needs of the students and the programs have achieved outcomes and you have evidence to show this, then you would be eligible. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Tracey Spiers Nerang shs:18/7/2011 11:43AM
Is the Chaplaincy service a partnership? The chaplain is not employed by the school and has developed the program for the school. He is employed by a NFP organisation Sripture Union?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Tracey. Thank you for your question. Your application will be eligible if submitted with your not-for-profit organisation as your partner organisation. However, a person (the chaplain) is not eligible as a partner organisation. Good luck!

Gerri Keppler:18/7/2011 05:08PM
Hi Josie, we come under an indepenant school but we only see children up to age 5 (we are also special needs). We are partnering with a mainstream school to design a program that would continue support of these children once they enter mainstream school. The other school is putting the application in for that. In relation to the same program though, we are also partnering with a TAFE to help train students to be able to run this program in other schools. Do we consider this one project or two seperate ones? Can we apply for a seeding grant between us and TAFE (as partner) while the school applies for a seeding grant between them and us (as partner)? It is two different aspects of the same program. Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Gerri. Thank you for your question. The first partnership that you describe is ineligible as it is between two schools. Under the NAB Schools First program, a school must apply with at least one community organisation which is any organisation other than a school. The second partnership that you describe is eligible as it is with a community organisation, and a TAFE is defined as a community organisation. As both are the same partnership, I would suggest submitting one application involving both schools (using one as the lead school) and the TAFE as the community organisation. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Terri:19/7/2011 01:35PM
Hi Josie, my question is quite similar to the above one. We too receive school funding for a handful of school aged children but also hold DGR and TCC status and the majority of our work is for early intervention 0 - 5. Just a few of the 5yros receive special needs funding because they are school age. I was under the belief that we could be used as a community partner because of our charity status and the fact that we are early intervention. We have do not run school programmes and our 5yros often attend their own school as well as us. We do not employ mainstream teachers but rather early intervention specialists and we are a registered not-for-profit. Can we or can\'t we be used as a community partner?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Terri, If you are not a school and you seem not to be as you are mostly early intervention or pre - school, you can be regarded as a community partner. A few school age children will not be an issue. We could be more specific with more information if you would like to contact the info line. Regards, Sharon

Kathleen Konarew:20/7/2011 07:33AM
Daer Josie, What sort of documents would be appropriate to add to the final three pages added on at the end. Do you want something like the copy of minutes to one of our meetings, attendance sheets, survey or evaluation forms we intend to give out, our logo, quantitative or qualitative data? Thank you.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Kathleen. Thank you for your question. All of the examples you've listed would be beneficial as part of your three pages of supporting documentation. Images, audio files, videos etc. won't be considered, so please do not include those. I would suggest including what you feel would most support your application. Good luck!

Carolyn Marklew:20/7/2011 09:31AM
I am a Partnership Broker working with a community organisation and a school that is preparing a seed funding submission. The community org. already has a holiday program for disadvantaged youth that is run by volunteers and supported by donations. The partnership is going to include 10 more students from one school who have been identified as at risk. It is planned to spend the NAB funds on the costs involved in running the camps, food, fuel, equipment etc. How do we show this without it looking as though it is a fee for service?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Carolyn, A school can only win an award if the partnership itself is strong and all partners are committed to the program. The judges look at the evidence that shows that the partners are working together, the activities are designed by the school and the partner to meet the needs of the students and it is the partnership that is responsible for the educational outcomes for the students. If the school is fortunate enough to receive an award, how the funds are spent is up to the school, as long as they are used to strengthen the partnership. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

anita mangan:20/7/2011 11:14AM
I am wondering if a program that has agencies coming into the school and helping students with life skills such as drug and alcohol counselling, accommodation options, family counselling etc and then the students using these skills to go and work with other community organisations eg. homeless, elderly, disabled fits the criteria or does it have to be the same agency working with the school and getting the student outcomes?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Anita. Under the NAB Schools First program, a school-community partnership is a relationship between a school and at least one non-school organisation, agency or entity that is aimed at improving the educational outcomes of young people through a combined, ongoing program. If the agencies are coming into the school for a one off visit, then this is not a partnership under NAB Schools First. If, however, there is a plan in place and the program is long-term and sustainable, then this is considered a partnership. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Manju Mohandoss:20/7/2011 12:25PM
Hello Josie Can you please look at our application form for NAB Schools First SEED FUNDING and email me if more need to be added. Thanks With kind regards Manju

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Manju. Unfortunately, I am unable to review your application but if you have answered all of the questions and are ready to submit, then please do so. Ensure that you receive an onscreen confirmation as well as an email confirmation with your application reference number which can be used if you have any queries. If you have already submitted your application, good luck!

raechel mccarthy:20/7/2011 12:29PM
I have several questions relating to the seed funding application 1. When describing how I plan to award funds. is it acceptable to describe hoe money would be used to purchase teacher casual releif (provided I specify what these teachers would be expected to do during this time) 2. I understand you are not allowed to mention school names in the application. What about the uploaded attachments? I would like to include a planning proforma that we have used in our discussions with our major business partner. This document has the name of the schools involved wriietn on it. I also mention the business name all though the application. This is OK isn\'t it?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Raechel. In answer to your questions: 1. It is acceptable to mention that a casual relief teacher would be employed to work on the partnership. 2. The partner name can be referred to throughout the application but the school name should not. If you are able to remove the school name from any documents you plan to upload, then this is advised. Good luck!

Sarah:20/7/2011 12:37PM
Just wondering how best to reference research or attaching evidence without taking up precious word count in windows, as these can long list of authors names etc? What have others done ? Do we attach a reference page/evidence ie MOU/budget as the attachments?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Sarah, In a response to Delphi on 8/7 there is an example of what reference to research could look like. You need to be succinct and specific. A list of authors is not advisable, just evidence that this research exists. Your supplementary material might be the place for more detail. Sharon (ACER)

raechel.mccarthy:20/7/2011 01:03PM
Sorry. Just a further clarification on the attachment. I can therefore have the name and signature of the company owner on the attachment. Can it also have the signature of the \"lead school representative\"? I understand the attachment can only add up to 3 A4 pages in total with 12 point font?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Raechel. This should be fine. Thanks.

Catherine:21/7/2011 08:55AM
This is the first time our school has applied for an NAB award. We currently have a partnership with an organisation to implement a program into the school, this partnership has only been running since the start of the year, I am unsure which award we should apply for the impact or seed? Can you help with this information?

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi Catherine, Good question. In order to be eligible for an Impact Award you need to be able to prove that the partnership is having an "Impact" on your students. In order to prove this you need evidence - research results, statistics and data and so on. If you don't have any of this, you should apply for Seed Funding as these are for partnership that are new or in the early stages (which sounds more like your partnership). Go onto our website and read the Applications Guidelines - this will provide you with a clear breakdown of what is required for each award category. You can find this information under the Tips & Resources / Toolkit section of our website - http://www.schoolsfirst.edu.au/sf-toolkit/. Don't forget - applications close next Friday, 29 July 2011 at 5.00pm AEST. Good luck.

Jamie:21/7/2011 09:34AM
Hi, Re: Supporting evidence and attachments. I have a series of supporting evidence such as data and letters from various organisations. Should I title each of these att 1, att 2 att 3 att 4 etc, and then in the selection criterion refer to the evidence as (see att 1)? Also am I write in assuming that these supporting documents do not count towards th word limit for each criterion?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jamie. Thank you for your question. Your supporting documentation is limited to one file only of three (3) pages maximum in length and 1MB maximum in size. While there is no word limit and it does not count towards the word limit in each question in each criteria, it must be in Type 12 font as a minimum. You may choose to set up your supporting documentation as you like. Good luck!

Tamara Smith:21/7/2011 09:42AM
Hi there, We have had a lot of difficulty formatting the application on the PDF online application form so we are working in Word while we draft. Do we have to copy and paste each line of the application when we are ready to submit or is there a simpler way to transfer the Word document into your PDF format? Thanks for your assistance Tamara

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Tamara. Thank you for your question. You need to submit your application via our online application form not the online PDF. Click on the following link to register and begin your application - http://www.schoolsfirst.edu.au/sf-awards-login.phps. You will be able to copy and paste your responses in word into the online application form. Good luck!

Jamie:21/7/2011 10:18AM
Hello, I have a number of questions revolving around the one topic. The topic is: last semester the school and the partner organisation worked together on a pilot project to assess the plausibility of the program we are applying funding for. The pilot project was a success and, we are using it as evidence in different ways in the different criterion. My questions are: 1 is it ok to use one example a number of different if it demonstrates different things? 2 I have been stating the name of the project, and then discussing it in relation to answering the criterion in question, without giving any details of the project unless it is necessarily ask for it. For example criterion 3 allows us to elaborate on the nature of the project, were as for criterion 2 we simply state the name of the project and refer to the process of how it come about and how it informed the following project, without discusses the pilot projects details. Is this ok, or do we need to elaborate on the pilot project each time we mention it? Thanks so much, I hope this is not complicated to answer Jamie

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jamie, Q1: I would imagine that a pilot project would set out to achieve a number of things and of course this can be used as evidence in a variety of ways. Q2: It would be ok to elaborate once so that the judges are fully informed of what the project set out to do and what it achieved. Then refer to it rather than explain again. My advice: Be careful of simply writing about the project or the program throughout your application. The judges are looking at the partnership and what makes it a strong one. How does the partnership work with this project, are you all collaborating on the activities and the outcomes? The program is important but how the partnership works is more important. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Jamie:21/7/2011 10:23AM
Third question for the day, and this follows on from my previous enquiry about the pilot project. Can we use the pilot project as a form of research, as that is essentially what the project was for us?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jamie, Yes, a pilot program can be regarded as research. There would have been some other research that was conducted even before the pilot program and this can also be used. What made you think that this would be successful? What was out there already that prompted you to do what you did? Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Alex:21/7/2011 11:17AM
I just wanted to double check, if part of the grant is to be used to subsidise music lessons for students who could otherwise not afford these lessons, is this contrary to guidelines? The music lessons are provided by a local community band (non-profit and self-funded.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Alex. If successful for a NAB Schools First Award, the funds will need to be used on the development of the successful school-community partnership. How you use the funding is at your discretion so long as it is on the award winning partnership. Good luck!

Jamie:21/7/2011 11:44AM
Hello, Can we use reference to research in criterion other than 1? For example, in criterion 3, when drawing links between activities and needs/goals, can we say that x will produce y, which is demonstrated by Joan (2009) who makes this point clear?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jamie, We would encourage you to make reference to the research and this is one way (and a very good way) of establishing the links between the need, the activities, the goals and the outcomes. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

zoe:21/7/2011 11:52AM
Hi Our school choir would like to raise money to buy a portable piano that can be used wherever they perform. We are only a small school (200+ students). At present the choir is an extra curricula and taught by parents before school. Ideally, we would purchase a sound system, musical instruments and be able to bring in specialists teachers for other areas of interest such as drama. Music and drama are essential for the development of the whole child. How would we go about apply for a grant when our partnerships are between the school and the parents. We will be grateful for any support. Thank you.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Zoe. Under NAB Schools First, a school-community partnership is a relationship between a school and at least one non-school organisation, agency or entity that is aimed at improving the educational outcomes of young people. A partnership between a school and parents is not eligible. If you are interested in forming a school-community partnership and need a partner, register for our Partnership Matching Service - an online 'dating' tool aimed at helping schools and community organisations form a partnership. Click on the following link to register - http://www.schoolsfirst.edu.au/sf-pms-login.phps. Thanks.

Edwina Ricci:21/7/2011 01:00PM
Hi. Our school is planning its partnership with a local Austism Services group called Irabina. In writing my application I was concerned that they may be considered a school and therefore not eligible to partner with us a local High School? Can you please clarify this as we are developing our joint programs and don\'t want to be disqualified if we are not suitable partners for the NAB grants. Thankyou. Edwina

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Edwina. Thank you for your question. Under NAB Schools First, a partnership between a school and another school is not eligible as a school-community partnership. A school needs to partner with at least one non-school entity. If Irabina is registered as a school, then they are not eligible as your community partner. If you need a partner, register for our Partnership Matching Service - an online 'dating' tool aimed at helping schools and community organisations form a partnership. Click on the following link to register - http://www.schoolsfirst.edu.au/sf-pms-login.phps. Thanks.

Hi Just a querie about the supporting documentation. Can the 3 pages be uploaded as a PDF?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Lorraine. The supporting documentation can be uploaded as a PDF document - it needs to be one file. Thanks.

Jean Clayton:22/7/2011 11:43AM
I am preparing an Impact application which is an extension of successful work from a Seeding grant. We are waiting on evaluative and supporting comments from our partners but I am wondering if this constitutes enough evidence of collaboration, since the partnerships are rather diverse relating to each elective eg Paramedic/ Architecture/ Sustainable Futures) rather than with a single body, and so far it has not been feasible to set up a governing body with minutes of meetings etc. because we are dealing with university units who see each other as competitors in specific areas, although this is our intention in this more advanced phase. Our application relates to offering community-based electives and independent resource websites that have been developed to support these, and the website and student testimonials will constitute some of the evidence of success to date. We want to further develop and share these with other schools around Australia (teaching notes and web resources) so that they can engage with local community organisations and universities in the way that we have been able to. I realise that this is a rather unusual project in the terms of the Awards, but the Seeding grant in the same genre was successful and so I am approaching this with some confidence but also with some difficulty. Advice about the kind of evidence I am collecting would be appreciated.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Jean, The judges obviously felt that your partnership was a good one and fitted the terms of NAB Schools First. If this partnership has been able to show that it is sustainable and can show tangible outcomes for students then you should apply. Evidence to show student outcomes could be in the form of student results, subject choices, attendance, employment pathways. Hard to be more specific without knowing the partnership. Please go to the Guidelines on the website as these are very detailed and will give you some examples. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Carolyn Marklew:22/7/2011 11:53AM
With regards to the last item on the submission and the use of award funds. Is this to include a budget or as that is included in Q.2 should this section refer to a description of the use of funds and how they will contribute to the goals. How is that different from the budget?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Carolyn. This question is to help identify your planned use of the awards funds, should you be successful. It does not need to be detailed but just a proposed list of items the funding will be used towards. Good luck!

Susan Bannister:22/7/2011 01:25PM
Hi there! I just submitted an application and received a confirmation email, thank you. But I thought you should know that after hitting the \"submit\" button, an error page appears and NAB directs you back to their home page. It\'s a bit disconcerting.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Susan. Thank you for letting us know of this error. I will look into it. If anyone else has the same issue, please feel free to contact us on 1800 649 141. Good luck!

Jean Clayton:24/7/2011 09:13AM
I just had a thought that all of us beavering over our applications should congratulate NAB on winning a 2011 Australian Business Award for the Schools First Initiatives -- well deserved for stimulating such a variety of great ideas floating around schools and hopefully then supported by this opportunity or by other sources of funding.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jean. Thank you for your kind words over our recent Australian Business Awards win. We feel very lucky to be working on such a rewarding program that is helping recognise the fantastic work happening within our communities. Best of luck with your application.

Delphi:24/7/2011 11:20PM
Hello ! Please clarify if there is a requirement to validate our principal\'s support for our nomination by including a letter from the principal in the supplementary 3 pages? Is this preferable and / or essential ? Or, is simply ensuring to include the principal’s contact details in the cover sheet sufficient? Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Delphi. You do not need a letter from the Principal in your three pages of supplementary material but the Principal needs to be aware and supportive of your submission. This is a requirement in the Terms and Comditions. Good luck!

Mark Brantingham:25/7/2011 03:20PM
Hi! We are currently working on establishing an alternative High School in our region (ALESCO). The high school is aimed to provide a unique, alternative education pathway for disengaged students from all our local schools. Our partnership would be between a Community College (who will establish the school)and one of the local schools as the lead partner. We were hoping to use the funds for initial establishment of the school - including DET application and bringing in professional consultants . Would this project be considered favourably under the NAB seed awards?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Mark. Under the NAB Schools First program, a partnership needs to be between a school and at least one non-school entity. A partnership between two schools or two community organisations is not eligible. I hope this helps.

Lorraine:26/7/2011 08:54AM
Hi Concerning Supporting documentation. Will an application be penalized for not having submitted any docs. Secondly is it appropriate to included scanned emails and clarify them with size 12 font. As many planning docs are not in word but exist as PDF\'s and not all 12 font, can these be included scanned and explaned in 12 font. Also if a Photo is included as part of the final PDF (no recgnition of the school) will the whole supporting document then not be used in judging? Are you prefering letters of support for supporting documents. Mny thanks.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Lorraine. Thank you for your questions. An application will not be penalised for not submitting any supporting documentation - this is available to applications that wish to provide supplementary information to support their response to any section, but is not compulsory. Supplementary information can include letters of support or quantitative/qualitative data. Any scanned items which will form part of your supporting documentation do not need to be resized in size 12 font. The judges will not consider any images in your supporting documentation but inclusion of images will not affect any other information included. Good luck!

Mark Brantingham:26/7/2011 11:18AM
Hi Josie Further to my last querie about using the funds to establish an alternative high school (ALESCO school) - the alternative high school would be run by the Community College (a not for profit RTO), so the students would be moving from the traditional high school environment to the Community College environment - within which is the alternative high school... Does this fit?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Mark. If the partnership is between your school and the RTO, then this is eligible. If the partnership is between the school which sits within the RTO, then this is not eligible. The partnership needs to be between two separate entities - a school and a community organisation. I'm happy to clarify further, so please feel free to contact me on 1800 649 141. Thanks.

Phil Cranney:26/7/2011 02:32PM
Hi Josie, We are just trying to choose the best supporting documents that increase our chances of becoming a finalist. Which document would the judging panel prefer? 1. a signed letter of support from the partner with broad committments to the partnership and the project, or 2.An unsigned draft Partnership MOU that has plenty of detail of committment and roles?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Phil. Thank you for your question. Both documents would be very beneficial to your application and as you have three pages available to you through the supporting documentation section, I would suggest including both. Otherwise, select the one that you feel more strongly supports your application. Good luck!

Phil Cranney:27/7/2011 11:01AM
Hi Josie, Having not been online yet to submit the draft, I am concerned about formatting in the online application as we have a number of tables which help better explain various links in our application. Are tables allowed as long as they fall within the word limit? Also, we have prepared our budget in excel, which includes 5 columns and approx, 20 rows containing numbers and words to explain the expenditure. Could you foresee any formatting issues for this kind of budget submission? Are there any word limits to the budget? Thanks again for your time.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Phil. Thank you for your questions. The online application form is for text responses only. You can use your three pages of supporting documentation for any graphs, tables, etc. The spreadsheet will also need to be included as part of your supporting documentation. Please note that the supporting documentation is limited to three (3) pages, via one file and 1MB in size maximum. Good luck!

Neill Francis:27/7/2011 01:14PM
If the box says a maximum of 500 words is it okay to put in 550 words??

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Neill. Thank you for your question. Each question has a 10% buffer so that an application response is not cut off mid-sentence. A 500 word section will therefore accept 550 words but it will stop accepting words at this point. Good luck!

Monique Osborn:27/7/2011 01:32PM
Hi Josie our school is looking to partner with Monash University Gippsland students to work with families and teachers to support a language acquistion program. Monash is interested in holding literacy tutorials on site so that students can combine theoretical with practical. We ewould be looking to purchase seating for students- as we have a room but limited furniture. Is it possible to claim this as part of the budget? Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Monique. Thank you for your question. If successful for a NAB Schools First Award, the funds will need to be spent on enhancing and developing the partnership. How you do this is at your discretion, but the funds need to be spent directly on winning the partnership. Good luck!

Sandy Blanch and Clare Cox :27/7/2011 03:25PM
Just talked to Lyn from NAB who gave advice about saving our application in pdf. We tried to do this to no avial - our system is at fault (state operating system has just been changed over and some issues still exist). Would it be possible to forward a pfd of our application for Nambour State High School to my email address? This would be much appreciated. We have seen the place in your website where our application is saved, just can\'t save or print it unfortunately at this stage. We will get our tech guys onto it when time allows. thanks Sandy Blanch and Clare Cox.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Sandy and Clare. Thank you for your question. Can you please email your application reference number (which you will find in your confirmation email) to me at info@schoolsfirst.edu.au so that I can locate your application and send you the PDF. Thanks.

Robyn Farrands - Bloomfield River State School:27/7/2011 03:38PM
We are a remote indigenous school in Far North QLD, and we have some questions regarding our eligibility to recieve an impact grant for a project that we are seeking to fund. The project we are seeking to fund follows on from a very sucessful project that we have recently completed. The project involved the school, a local film-maker and communithy liason officer and the local indigenous commmunity. Within this project, students worked with the film-maker/liason officer to create a poem and rap song/video in the local language which included and involved members of the local indigenous community. The project was embedded successfully into the school curriculum and significantly improved attendance and enhanced community/school relations. We would like to fund an extension of this project so that we can take it further and create short films of traditional stories provided by indigenous women in the local \'women\'s group\'. Within the Eligibility Checklist of the Impact Award Guidelines, it states (in section 2.v)that \"the parnership is not with a business offering a service for a fee, or offering a program for which the school is paying, or has paid, to have delivered.\" Our question is this... Are we eligible if we are seeking to pay our local film-maker and community liason officer as part of the project. He is an integral part of the project, and it cannot be completed without him.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Robyn. Thank you for your question. If you are currently paying to have the partnership implemented at the school, then this is a fee for service and means your partnership is ineligible. If, however, there are some costs associated with the partnership being delivered but it is an ongoing partnership which has been embedded into the school, then this is eligible. If successful, the awards funds can be used to pay your local film-maker and community liaison officer. The strength of your partnership appears to be with the local indigenous community so I would suggest you focus on this.

Hello, hoping you could assist with my questions relating to the impact award, which are: 1. I am an employee of the community parter, however am collating the final version of our impact application on behalf of the school and us. Is it OK for me to submit the application or should someone from the school log in and hit submit? 2. For the impact awards, are the 3 pages of attachments to be from one file? Thanks, Kylie.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Kylie. Thank you for your post. In answer to your questions: 1. The application needs to be submitted by the lead contact person at the school. 2. The three pages of supporting documentation needs to be uploaded via one file. Good luck!

Helen Whitkin:28/7/2011 09:10AM
We are preparing an application for seed funding and had a couple of questions: 1) We are citing some studies in Criterion 1, do you need full academic references included? If yes, within the 500 word limit, or as an attachment? 2) We understand the need to remove the name of the school from the application. However the name of our partner organisation will identify the suburb and therefore, theoretically, the school. Should we therefore also remove that name from within the application and just refer to them as the Partner Organisation (or in this case \"the Community Garden\"). Thanks! Helen

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Helen. Thank you for your question. When citing studies, it is ok to just include the details of the author and the year within your response as this is enough for the judges to investigate further should they need to. You are able to refer to the partner organisation by name throughout the application. Good luck!

Brett Orchard:28/7/2011 09:16AM
Morning We have submitted our impact award application and been told that the 3 page attachment can not be submitted. Can this be clarified quickly please. Cheers Brett Orchard

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Brett. I need further information to be able to determine why your three pages of supporting documentation could not be submitted. How have you been told that it could not be submitted? Any issues you would have faced in uploading your documents would have been alerted to you during the uploading and not after you submitted. Can you please clarify so that I can investigate this for you. It may be that your documents exceeded the maximum file size of 1MB. Thanks

Anna Carrucan:28/7/2011 11:41AM
Hi Josie, We have a budget outline that we wish to include as evidence, but there is no information in the application documents about GST (do we budget to include, not include, or add?) as relates to the seed award? Could you clarify? Thank you.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Anna. The budget outline is fine to include as part of your three pages of supplementary documentation. You may wish to include or exclude GST but please specify which so that this is clear for the judges. Good luck!

Hayley Kopittke:28/7/2011 11:45AM
Hi I was wanting to ask a question about the attachments for the application - are they able to have the name of the school on any of the attachments or do we need to block out the school name on an attachment too? Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Hayley. Thank you for your question. If you are able to remove the school's name from your supplementary documentation, then you are advised to do so. If not, this is fine as the head judge will be able to remove the information before it is viewed by the judging panel. Good luck!

Michelle Maunder:28/7/2011 12:32PM
Hi Josie Have you any tips for presenting the budget clearly and concisely without use of a table or tabs? I have a number 10 or so line items that look like this: Activity: brief description: and costs allocated eg Teacher Release: Policy Development, Risk Assessments & Procedures $3500 It doesnt read as clearly as when presented in a table. Any suggestions Thanks I imagine you are busy today! Michelle

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Michelle. You can use your three pages of supplementary documentation to present your information in a table if you feel this is the way to display it best. As the application text boxes remove any formatting of tables and bullet points etc. the supplementary documentation should be used to display spreadsheets, tables, graphs etc. Good luck!

Michelle:28/7/2011 01:23PM
Hi Josie Could I please ask, supporting evidence and our 3 A4 pages of supporting documents. Each of our collaborators in this program are putting forward a letter of their support to the program. This will take up our 3 x A4 pages of supporting evidence, is there another section for supplying tables and further information, or can we use web links to our other partner organisations? Regards Michelle

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi Michelle, One letter of support is plenty, you can refer to the others without adding them to the supplementary material. What the three pages should contain is detailed information or hard evidence that supports what you have said in the application about how the partners and the school collaborate, how outcomes have been achieved and how benefits to all are achieved...etc Regards, Sharon ACER

Brian Martin:28/7/2011 03:24PM
A technical question: how can I make adjustments to my submission. I saved it after completing the checklist without pressing submit. When I have gone back our application is reading as submitted. I can’t access it

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Brian. If your application is reading as submitted then it appears that it has been submitted. The application will only submit if the submit button at the bottom of the Checklist section is clicked on, and this may have occured as you were checking all items in the Checklist section. Depending on what adjustments you need, we may be able to assist. Please contact us on info@schoolsfirst.edu.au to discuss this further. Thanks.

Ken:28/7/2011 04:19PM
Hi. Our local science teachers association last year organised a trip for studetns to visit the US and particpate in the US Space Academy Program with the US Space and Rocket Centre. This was a non profit venture involving 38 students and 7 teachers. The organisation also organised with teachers to run workshops on astronomy and space travel. Our school was the focus school with several of our students being fortunate to participate. This year the organisation has extended the participants to all of NSW and intend on exteding the program to include video conferencing and satelite workshops so that country Australian schools can also be involved. We have collected surveys from the students that attended. Considerng the change to the program do we quality for Impace or seed funding? And is there any thing that we should include in the application?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Ken, The focus of the NAB Schools First awards is partnership. The need here might be to enhance academic excellence and engage students in Science - how was this need established, what measures did you use, what research exists to show that trips to the US Space prog will meet the goals of your program? How will the partnership work? How will you collaborate? What are the benefits? These need to be addressed in the criteria. To be eligible for an Impact Award you must show evidence of improved outcomes as a result of the partnership. If the p'ship is still in its infancy or planning stages then Seed would be appropriate. Regards, Sharon ACER

Michael:28/7/2011 06:44PM
I have been trying to submit my final 3 pages. The file is 991Kb, however I am being told on your site that it exceeds the 1Mb. Is there an explanation for this?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Michael. Our server may be reading your file size differently to how your computer is because it is very close to the 1MB limit. Please submit your application without the supporting documentation, and then email your supporting documentation to support@schoolsfirst.edu.au with your application reference number (which you will receive once the application has been submitted) and we will include it with your application. Thanks.

Margie Mercer:28/7/2011 10:02PM
Hello Josie - on the eve of having to submit I have a small question. Do you think a set of plans for a park/sporting development might be considered as support material? I do hope you don\'t have to stay up all night answering questions! Margie

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Margie. Thank you for your question. Information in your supporting documentation should be able to best support your application. If you believe plans for a park/sporting development is relevant, then please feel free to include. Good luck!

Elizabeth:28/7/2011 11:10PM
In a panic here! I clicked the Submit button almost an hour ago. It took me a page saying the page I was looking for wasn\'t there (it had an NAB logo on it). Then it took me to the log in page which stated I had submitted, but I haven\'t received an email confirming this. What do I do?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Elizabeth. Our website is experiencing a lot of traffic at the moment with applications closing today, so it may take a few hours for confirmation emails to come through. Alternatively, please check the firewall settings on your computer as this may be stopping the email coming through. In the meantime, please advise the school name and I can check if your application has been successfully submitted. Thanks.

Michelle:29/7/2011 02:29AM
Hi. I woud like to ask about evidence. What kinds of evidence are you looking for with regard to the criteria section of the application. We have letters expressing our partners support to our program. However I am unsure if this is a satisfactory form of evidence. Our partner is a non profit organisation and delivers its monetary support on a yearly basis to various programs around our community, our other supporting co-contributors, ie: our school and its P&C association have been looking foward to opportunity to run our proposed program for some time and our parent body is very eagerly awaiting its implementation. Our school & P&C can support this program indefinitely for as long as it is wanted/required by the parent body. Our facilitators are available this year and the next and the next, however, I may not be able to show evidence that they will be available 3 years from now. Could you give an outline of the evidence you are seeking with regard to Criteria section. Regards Michelle

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Michelle, Not sure which of the criteria you are referring to. All of them require some form of evidence. I would suggest you go to the guidlines in the Tips and Resources section and see what type of evidecne you might need for each crtierion. What you have here sound like sustainability. How has the P and C indicated their support? what have they put in place or are prepared to put in place? This can be regarded as evidence. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Lisa Webster:29/7/2011 10:16AM
I am applying for seed funding. in addressing criteria one I need to make reference to relevant research and also evidence and measure student behaviour. As this is seed funding, what am I measuring as the program hasn\'t begun yet?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Lisa, Criterion 1 requires the identificaiton of a need that is the reason why this partnership has been developed. (Absenteeism, behaviour, retention, literacy, numeracly, well being etc) School data will be availble as evidence that this is an area of need in your school. Pre and post testing/measures help to show whether the program will be effective. When setting up a program, some research would have been undertaken to see what other shools have done in this area, what works and what doesn't. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Lisa webster:29/7/2011 10:30AM
I am applying for seed funding and in criteria 5 we have to give evidence of continuing commitment by the school and the partner. how do we provide evidence when the program is only in the initial stages?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Dear Lisa, Please refer to the Guidelines as these will give you some examples. For a program to be sustainable, you need to show how committed the school and the partner is to the partnership. A business plan, embedding the program into the timetable, allocation of staff, time and financial commitment, resources etc all will show that this is something that will work and there are people who are committed to making it work. Regards, Sharon (ACER)

Angela Greening:29/7/2011 10:50AM
With questions 1 summary of profile and 2 school profile are the word limits just guidelines as no maximum is mentioned. After finishing our application we initially were applying for the seeding grant, but I feel we have a good chance at the impact grant, can I submit the same entry into both categories? - just a thought

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Angela. The word limits are guidelines provided by the judges so please try and stick to them. Our preference would be that you only submit your application in one category, based on which you are most eligible. If you choose to submit in both and are successful, you will only be successful in one category not both. Good luck!

Julie :29/7/2011 10:53AM
Good Morning, Can you please clarify the supporting document attachments can be media articles with schools names. Thank you

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Julie. This is fine. Where possible, please remove school name from any supporting documentation but we understand that in some instances this can't be done. Good luck!

:29/7/2011 11:14AM
Dear Josie Under the project category - our application has two components - vocational and performing arts, I\'m not sure which one I should highlight - or should I concentrate on the response to give the judges get an understanding that it is focussed around developing skills in performing arts?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hello. Please describe your project in relation to both components if both are relevant to your partnership. Good luck.

Deb Bland:29/7/2011 11:17AM
Hi Josie, I have just sent off our application but had difficulties attaching our supportive docs. Once I had ticked all the box\'s at the end,I returned to window 6 ithink and tried again. I then hit the upload button and it all completely disappear. I had not hit the \'submit button\'. I was given a refence number thus concluded that we had now submitted. My concern is that the supportive doc do not appear on the PDF copy. Did they get up loaded when I hit the button...is there nay way of checking...panic!!!

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Deb. The supporting document will not appear on the PDF copy of your application - this is just the application that you have submitted. If you provide me with the name of your school, I can investigate if the supporting document has come through. Otherwise, please feel free to email your supporting documentation to support@schoolsfirst.edu.au with your application reference number (which you will receive once the application has been submitted) and we will include it with your application. Thanks.

jennifer gregory:29/7/2011 12:37PM
When we attach the pages is it okay to attach two pages in pdf format or should they all be in word?

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jennifer. You can attach up to three pages so two pages is fine. Good luck!

Elizabeth:29/7/2011 12:43PM
Thanks Josie. I just checked my email and there is still no confirmation email. The School\'s name is Ruse Public School.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Elizabeth. I have two applications from Ruse Public School - one for Impact and one for Seed Funding - so I can confirm that these have successfully been submitted. Good luck!

julie orchard:29/7/2011 12:54PM
For the budget box it indicates number of words and is in the format of a word document. Should we be listing the areas of expenditure with $amount alongside. Is this what is required or I did read your suggestion of adding an excel style budget sheet as the additional material. With thanks Julie

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Julie. The application question text boxes will only take text and will not take any tables, graphs etc. For this question, you can respond with a list of expenditure including $$ amount alongside or you can include the information in the supporting documentation if it already exists in a spreadsheet. Good luck!

Jenny Brazier:29/7/2011 01:23PM
I am unable to submit my grant application as the work telephone number box on the community partner details section will not accept an overseas number. I am unable to get an alternative number at this now short notice. Thanks!

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jenny. You are still able to submit the application - please use the school's number in the interim and should you be successful, we can update our database to include the overseas number for the community partner. Thank you.

Jean Clayton:29/7/2011 01:33PM
Last minute panic... I tried to ring but could just leave a message. In the pages of supporting documentation (Part 4) are we able to insert into the pdf any images or hyperlinks, since our project is partly a website for schools to share and we are not sure how else we can demonstrate it is a professional product

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jean. Please do not insert any images into your supporting documentation as the judges WILL NOT look at these. Please feel free to refer to the website and provide the URL for them to investigate further should they need to. Good luck!

Deb Bland:29/7/2011 01:47PM
Thanks Josie... school\'s name is Streeton Primary School.

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Deb. Your application has been submitted but it has no supporting documentation so can you please send an email to support@schoolsfirst.edu.au with your supporting documentation and your application reference number and we will add this to your application. Good luck!

Jo Harding:29/7/2011 01:57PM
Dear Josie, Our primary school is located adjacent to a complex of retirement villas and we are starting to develop a partnership with the residents to build a community vegetable garden. But the residents are not a formal registered group, does this make the partnersip ineligible? Thanks

Josie Kaddour replied:
Hi Jo. As residents of the retirement village, I would suggest listing the retirement village as the community organisation - if this is a registered community organisation - instead of the residents. Your partnership will not be eligible with the residents but will be eligible with the retirement village if it is a registered organisation. Good luck!

John Foreman:29/7/2011 03:32PM
Hi Can the school name be on a supporting document? In particular, an email outlining commitment from our partner in the submission?

Belinda Allitt replied:
Hi John, where this can be omitted please do so, otherwise this will be fine, we will ensure all references to the school will be blocked out. Thanks

John Foreman:29/7/2011 03:50PM
Thanks Belinda - I will block it out and note that I have done so.
